The Beech Tree

The beech tree dropped a bough for me, all covered with a stunning fungi. I couldn't resist sharing it here. I have a new love affair with this beech as it lives outside my studio window in our new home. Our last place didn't have trees, because the owner that preceded our landlord decided to cut them all down.

Blair just added me to her fabulous Voltz-Clarke website. Shoot on over and take a look at all the wonderful artists she has over there. I'm especially partial to Romeo Alaeff's work and Sun Kwak's installations. Blair was the lovely curator of last year's Abbondanza show at the Ferragamo store space.

Going for Brevity

I'm in the process of writing a new artist's statement, which is similar to having a root canal. While I'm waiting for lightning to strike, I decided to shorten my older statement. I'm not sure if there's greater clarity, or if I'm just trying not to give it all away in the first handshake. I tried to retain the language of abundance without talking too much. It seems most of what I do is list when I write. The paintings are congruent to that impulse. Let me know what you think:

My pictures of mounds, stacks, piles, heaps, and staged arrangements contain a lexicon of cuttings, discards, statuary, bodies, edibles, and taxidermy. These piles convey an interest in classical notions of Vanitas still life and cornucopia as well as more contemporary notions of repetitive labor and mark-making.

A little something in process in the studio. The white areas are still incomplete, the whole picture is a 12" diameter round.

Schadenfreude

I just finished this little painting the other day, gouache on paper on panel. It measures 6" in diameter. You saw the under-drawing a few weeks ago. I think its funny. Ok, back to work. Deadlines.

Dour Drawing for a Dour Day

Raw Stage

A new painting I'm titling "Schadenfreude". Yes, my titles end up on little banners in the paintings, but I don't find the redundancy stultifying, I find it funny. The bird on the right is a Dodo, and the hocks of meat come from my meat catalog a few posts back. The portrait is a grotesque doe-eyed variation on self-portrait. That's all for now. I like my raw stages.
